Vigur, ═safjarardj˙p

Vigur is in Súðavík district and is the second largest island in Ísafjarðardjúp.  Located at the mouth of Skötufjörður and Hestfjörður, it is about 2 km in length and less than 400 m in width.  Vigur is a co-operative farm that practices mixed farming.  Vigur is considered to have one of the biggest breeding places for eider ducks in the country and as a consequence the gathering of eiderdown is considerable.  It is estimated that around 80 thousand puffins are on the island each summer, but there are also numerous black guillemots and arctic terns.  The only corn mill in Iceland is at Vigur from the year 1840.  Vigur received the Environmental Award of the Icelandic Tourist Board in the year 1995.  No tourist traveling in the Westfjords should miss the opportunity to visit Vigur.

The inhabitants of the island welcome you with a relaxed and calm manner and it is as if time stands still there.  On a walk around the island guests will have the opportunity to observe thousands of birds, for example, eider ducks, puffins and black guillemots.  After the walk refreshments will be available at Viktoríuhús.
